SSD – Now what is that and why?

Well here is something for you geeks out there!
Today I got hold of an Intel X-25M 160GB SSD drive. SSD stands for Solid State Disc and is basically fast flash memory, that you know from your digital camera, connected to the computer like a harddrive. Now what is so good about SSD, you might ask. Well it’s actually decently simple. Having everything already set in a type of memory, makes it easy to get hold of, instead of having to look for it on a magnetic media. You can look at it like remembering a phone number in your head or having to go to your desk and actually look for it.
Well for me, it meant that my MacBook Pro went from being sluggish in booting and opening larger programs and projects to opening things so fast that the network couldn’t give me an IP before the computer had complained about missing one. Now that is fast, trust me.
There are also other bennifits to the switch, like no vibrations, no heat, really low power consumption do to no moving parts and that it won’t break and loose all data if I drop it. Now I don’t plan on dropping my laptop on the floor, but if it did happen, at least all my data on the drive would be safe.
The HUGE minus to this, is still price…. 3200dkkr for 160GB. You can get a lot of traditional drives for that money, but imho it is worth it!
