Another review of books from yours truly!

This time I decided to take a look at a series of books by Michael Palin.

Michael Palin established his reputation with Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Ripping Yarns. His work also includes several films with Monty Python, as well as The Missionary, A Private Function, and an award-winning performance as the hapless Ken in A Fish Called Wanda and, more recently, American Friends and Fierce Creatures. His television credits include two films for the BBC’s Great Railway Journeys, the plays East of Ipswichand Number 27, and Alan Bleasdale’s GBH.

He has written books to accompany his seven very successful travel series, Around the World in 80 Days, Pole to Pole, Full Circle, Hemingway Adventure, Sahara, Himalaya and New Europe. Most have been No 1 bestsellers ad Himalaya was No 1 for eleven weeks. In 2006 the first volume of his diaries 1969-1979, The Python Years also spent several weeks on the bestseller lists. He is the author of a number of children’s stories, the play The Weekend and the novel Hemingway’s Chair. (Palin’s Travels)

The Bourne SupremacyIn the first book, The Bourne IdentityJason Bourne suffered amnesia. Over the course of the book he regained his memory with the help of aCanadian economist, Marie, and later found that he was previously an operative of the Central Intelligence Agency in an elite project in Southeast Asia and Vietnam codenamed Medusa. After a tragic accident involving the death of his family he joined Medusa in a blind attempt to avenge their needless murders. Following the American forces withdrawal from Vietnam he joined Project Treadstone 71, where he was used as bait for the infamous European assassin, Carlos the Jackal. Bourne took credit for various kills in China and the rest of Asia, acting as a rival to the Jackal, in order to draw him out of hiding and into the hands of the U.S. Government. In a climactic scene at the end of the book, the Jackal escaped and Bourne was almost killed as he was believed to be a traitor by his uninformed employers. Continue reading The Bourne Supremacy…

Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized ParodyBarry Trotter is a series of Harry Potter parodies written by Michael Gerber and published in the UK in a small hardback format uniform to the new edition of Bored of the Rings. The series to date comprises Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody (Barry Trotter and the Unauthorized Parody in the United States), Barry Trotter and the Unnecessary Sequel and Barry Trotter and the Dead Horse. The narrative features the adventures of “Barry Trotter”, “Lon Measly”, and “Ermine Cringer” who attend the “Hogwash School for Wizardry and Witchcrap”. It features strong postmodern metanarrative, as the book concerns their attempts to prevent the making of a movie, but the entire story is revealed to have been a movie itself, which in turn is shown to be a novel being written by Barry Trotter. Commander Honor Harrington, freshly graduated from the Royal Manticorian Navy’s Advanced Tactical Course, assumes command of CL-56 Fearless as it is completing an extensive weapons refit.

A successful young officer with a promising career in the service of her Queen, Honor’s delight at her new command soon turns to dismay as she realizes Fearless has been nearly stripped of her normal weapons and turned into a tactical testbed for new technology. After initial success in the opening rounds of fleet war games, Fearless suffers defeat after defeat as opposing officers correctly determine the safest way to deal with the light cruiser’s refitted weapons is to deny her the chance to use them.
